Biography

Born in 1891 in Bishop Auckland, Sydney Ryder enlisted in 18 Battalion DLI - the Durham Pals -in February 1915. In May 1916, he was attached to the 93 Light Trench Mortar Battery, as a Stokes gunner, and was wounded on 1 July 1916 - the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He was awarded a Military Medal, as a Lance Corporal, for his bravery during a German raid on 93 Brigade's trenches in August 1917. He was demobilized from the Army in 1919 and returned to work as a woollen warehouseman. Sydney Ryder died in 1967.
